1 liter ready-made vanilla custard
200g plain chocolate, broken into pieces
3 packets chocolate-flavored biscuits (e.g., Arnotts Choc Ripple)
500g cherries, halved and pitted
75ml kirsch (optional)
200g whole cherries with stems
600g tub double cream
400ml crème fraîche
50g icing sugar
Grated chocolate, for decoration
Directions
- Prepare the Chocolate Custard:
In a medium saucepan, combine the ready-made vanilla custard and the broken pieces of chocolate.
Place the saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly until the chocolate is fully melted and the mixture is smooth.
Remove from heat, cover with plastic wrap (gladwrap), and refrigerate to cool. - Make the Cream Layer:
In a large mixing bowl, lightly whip the double cream with the crème fraîche and icing sugar until soft peaks form.
Chill in the refrigerator until ready to assemble the trifle. - Assemble the Trifle:
In the bottom of a large trifle bowl, spoon a layer of the cream mixture.
Arrange a layer of chocolate-flavored biscuits on top of the cream.
Lightly sprinkle the biscuits with some of the kirsch, if using.
Add a layer of halved cherries, followed by a layer of the cooled chocolate custard.
Repeat the layers, continuing with cream, biscuits, kirsch, cherries, and chocolate custard until the trifle bowl is filled, finishing with a layer of the cream mixture on top. - Decorate:
Top the trifle with whole cherries with stems.
Sprinkle grated chocolate over the top for an elegant finish. - Serve:
Keep the trifle refrigerated until ready to serve.
Just before serving, lightly whip the cream mixture again, if necessary, and pile on top of the trifle.
Add additional grated chocolate and fresh cherries for decoration, if desired
